A Poplar Tree is a new Minecraft tree that naturally generates in the Dappled Forest biome. Its canopy can have red, orange or yellow leaves, while its trunk provides the new Poplar wood set. Break Poplar Leaves to obtain a sapling, plant it on suitable ground and wait or use Bone Meal. Each sapling randomly chooses one of the three leaf colors when it grows.
Version note: Poplar Trees are now available in the stable Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50 Wilderness Bound releases.
Poplar Tree Quick Facts
| Feature | Confirmed information |
|---|---|
| Natural biome | Dappled Forest |
| Leaf colors | Red, orange and yellow |
| Sapling source | Poplar Leaves or Wandering Trader trades |
| Grown-tree color | Randomly selected when the sapling grows |
| Trunk block | Poplar Log |
| Main benefit | Renewable Poplar wood and decorative leaves |
| Current status | Released in Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50 |
All three colors share one Poplar Sapling item. There is currently no separate red, orange or yellow sapling.
Where Do You Find Poplar Trees in Minecraft?
Search for a Dappled Forest, an autumn biome that generates near cold biomes. Tall, pale Poplar trunks and colorful falling leaf particles make it easy to recognize. Fallen Poplar trees, Shelf Mushrooms, Red Shrubs and patches of Leaf Litter also appear around the forest floor.

If you need help identifying the biome, read what a Dappled Forest is in Minecraft or try our Dappled Forest seeds for Minecraft 26.3.
Java 26.3 players with cheats enabled can enter:
/locate biome minecraft:dappled_forest
The command finds the biome rather than a specific tree. Travel to the coordinates, then look for any of the three canopy colors.
How Do You Get a Poplar Sapling?
Break or let Poplar Leaves decay after removing nearby logs. The leaves can drop Poplar Saplings, so collect at least one before leaving. Mojang also confirms that Wandering Traders can offer the sapling, providing another route when you cannot find the biome.

Use an ordinary tool for logs and collect leaves only when you need decorative leaf blocks. Do not confuse a Poplar Sapling with a Red Shrub; they are separate items with different Bone Meal behavior.
How Do You Grow a Poplar Tree?
Grow a Poplar Tree with this simple method:
- Plant one Poplar Sapling on suitable ground.
- Clear blocks above and around the sapling.
- Wait for natural growth or apply Bone Meal.
- Harvest the logs and allow leaves to drop more saplings.
- Replant to create a renewable Poplar wood farm.

A sapling can grow into a red, orange or yellow tree at random. Replant unwanted colors until you receive the canopy needed for your build. Mojang has not announced a way to lock the result before growth.
Leave generous vertical and horizontal space because Poplar Trees have tall trunks and long, narrow canopies. If Bone Meal fails, remove nearby blocks and try again. If Bone Meal is consumed without growth, widen the clear space before trying again.
How to Build a Simple Poplar Tree Farm
Plant saplings in rows with gaps between trunks, then keep one chest for Bone Meal, axes and spare saplings. Harvest each mature tree from the bottom upward and collect drops before replanting. Several growing spots reduce waiting time and make the three canopy colors easier to compare.

What Can You Make With Poplar Wood?
Poplar Logs craft into a pale, warm-gray wood set suited to modern, medieval and autumn builds. Available blocks include planks, stripped logs, wood, stairs, slabs, fences, fence gates, doors, trapdoors, signs and hanging signs. The set also includes Poplar boats and chest boats.

The neutral color pairs especially well with stone, cobblestone, deepslate, copper and vivid autumn leaves. Use logs for structural beams, planks for walls and the distinctive door or trapdoor as a focal detail.
Best Poplar Tree Building Ideas
Try Poplar blocks in forest cabins, covered bridges, fantasy libraries, village houses, campsites or bright interiors. Red Shrubs can extend the canopy color onto the ground; see our Red Shrub Minecraft guide for finding and multiplying them.

For a natural plantation, mix all three leaf variants instead of forcing one color. Add Leaf Litter and Shelf Mushrooms around the trunks to recreate the Dappled Forest atmosphere.
Poplar Tree Planning Guide
| Your goal | Best approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Find Poplar naturally | Search Dappled Forests near cold biomes | The tree does not naturally generate in ordinary forests |
| Start a renewable supply | Collect several saplings before leaving, then replant near your base | Leaves choose red, orange or yellow at random when the sapling grows |
| Build with one leaf color | Grow several saplings and keep the variants you need | Java 26.3 does not provide separate color-specific saplings |
| Collect matching ecosystem blocks | Gather Red Shrubs, Leaf Litter and Shelf Mushrooms during the same trip | Inventory space becomes the main constraint |
| Skip manual exploration | Use the locate-biome command when cheats are allowed | The command finds the biome, not an individual tree |
